Can't change patch

OK, so I have produced several patches, and they work in the OWL. I have saved one of them to user slot 4, but I can’t select it. When I press the pushbutton and hold it (as per the firmware 10+ instructions) then it goes red for about a second, then sometimes it goes green, (and sometimes it stays red) and then no matter how long I continue to hold it, it never flashes. So I can’t change patch. Is there a problem with firmware 14? Am I doing something wrong? (There is a very brief moment when the LED goes off after about 1 second of holding (there is no way that I would ever describe this as ‘flashing’!), but then moving the knobs doesn’t do anything at all, and there’s no changing from red to green as the instructions describe.) Please help!

So holding the button down and turning the A and B knobs doesn’t make the LED blink?

If you connect USB and run OwlControl, you should see the drop-down box change value when you move the knobs through the patch selections.

The cheat-sheet below has images of the knob positions:
OWL Pedal Getting Started v12.pdf (85.4 KB)

Aha, finally figured it out. The instructions on the cheat-sheet say:

‘…press and hold the LED pushbutton for about 3 seconds until the LED flashes…’

So that’s exactly what I was doing: holding the LED pushbutton until the LED flashes, and then if I interpret the brief ‘off’ of the LED as a flash’, then I released the button because the instructions say: ‘hold UNTIL the LED flashes.’. If I ignore the instructions and continue to hold the pushbutton, then I can change patch.

My suggestion is that the instructions are misleading. You do not hold the pushbutton until the LED flashes! You keep holding it down long after it flashes!

The instructions should say something like:

To change patch, press and hold down the LED pushbutton. After about 3 seconds, the LED should briefly flash - you are now in ‘patch select’ mode. Continue holding the pushbutton down and select the patch using the A and B knobs. The A knob selects between 5 banks, and the LED will change colour between red and green as you move the knob so that it is selecting another bank. The B knob selects between 8 patches in a bank, and again the LED will change between red and green as the knob is rotated. When you have set the A and B knobs to the desired patch, then release the pushbutton. The patch should now be active.

Here’s a nested activity graph:

Hold the button down
–LED flashes
----Select patch bank using A knob
------LED will go red/green for each bank
----Select patch number using B knob
------LED will go red/green for each patch
Release the button

good call - I’ll update the instructions!

(this is what happens when you let engineers write their own documentation :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)

Dear all,
I am a newbie using this wonderful pedal
I read your thread about changing the PATCHES …
If I understand, I can change the patch directly from the machine/pedal without a computer connected to it:

  • I tried everything I could … I followed the instructions on the paper sheet delivered with the machine, nothing…
  • Then I tried the method described in this thread, nothing, I can’t see any light flashing …

Now?
I connect my machine to my computer and use the OWLCONTROL program → I can change the patches in the machine thanks to the program OWLCONTROL.

So my question is:

  • Can I change the patches contained in the OWL machine without a computer connected to it?

If so can you reexplain how I should do ?
Please !!!

no one can help me ? really ?

hi @egnouf! welcome to the forum!

Try this:

  • connect to the pedal with OwlControl and click Load from OWL
  • hold down the LED pushbutton for three seconds then turn knob A
you should see the current patch change in OwlControl, in steps of 8, and also you should see the LED toggle (under your finger)
  • still holding the button, turn knob B
now you should see the current patch change in single steps

Does this work for you?

Here are some detailed instructions. (A YouTube video is in preparation as well.)

  1. Connect the OWL Pedal to a Power Supply, or use the USB cable connected to a computer to provide power.
  2. Press the Push button and hold it down. The LED will change colour from GREEN to RED.
  3. Keep holding the Push button down.
  4. After a couple of seconds, the LED will either: go dark for a very brief moment (and then stay RED), or change to GREEN.
  5. The OWL Pedal is now in ‘Patch select’ Mode. Keep holding the Push button down to stay in this mode.
Note: There is a major UI bug in the V12 Firmware. Depending on the rotation of the A knob when you press the Push button, the LED will now either be RED or GREEN. Go to step 7 for a RED LED, OR go to step 8 for a GREEN LED.
  6. Turn the A knob all the way counter-clockwise. The LED will now either be RED or GREEN. Go to step 7 for a RED LED, OR go to step 8 for a GREEN LED. Keep holding the Push button down!
  7. Turn the A knob to select the patch bank. There are 5 banks (A-E). The LED will change colour as you turn the A knob clockwise: Red for Bank A, Green for Bank B, Red for Bank C, Green for Bank D, Red for Bank E.
  8. Turn the A knob to select the patch bank. There are 5 banks (A-E). The LED will change colour as you turn the A knob clockwise: Green for Bank A, Red for Bank B, Green for Bank C, Red for Bank D, Green for Bank E.
  9. You should still be holding the Push button down!
  10. Turn the B knob to select the patch in the bank. (Starting from fully counter-clockwise is a good idea!) There are 8 patches in each bank. The LED will change colour as you turn the B knob clockwise: Green for Patch 1, Red for Patch 2, Green for Patch 3, Red for Patch 4, Green for Patch 5, Red for Patch 6, Green for Patch 7, Red for Patch 8.
  11. When you have selected the Patch you want, RELEASE the Push button. The OWL Pedal leaves ‘Patch select’ Mode, and goes back to the normal ‘Effect’ mode. The LED will now be GREEN again, and you can now audition the Patch you have selected.

Dear Martin Russ,
Bib big big thanks for this explanation !!!

I tried everything you mentionned, I am stack on the step 2.

  • I did step1, the led is GREEN.
  • I press on the Push Button until I hear the ‘click’ on the push button (I press very strongly on the button) and wait for 20 secondes…
  • The led is neither GREEN nor RED, the led is OFF (no light)
  • and so nothing, I can’t change the patch.

then I tried another solution :

  • I did step1, the led is GREEN.
  • I press on the Push Button but I don’t press very strongly, I don’t try to hear the ‘click’.
  • I wait for 20 secondes…
  • Nothing, the LED is OFF, not light, not RED, neither GREEN.
  • I can’t change the patch.

I have the V12 firmware.
OWLCONTROL program says V12 when I connect the machine to my computer. If I use the software, I can change the patches (I need to use the menu in the software while I wanted to do it without the computer).

Do you think my machine has an issue?
Shall I return to the shop where I bought it ?
Any advice ?

Again thanks lot for this long and very clear explanation !
Stephane.

Stephane,

There was an error in my post - I meant V12 firmware.

The LED should be GREEN normally. When you press the Push button (until it clicks) then the LED should change colour to RED.

It should not require a lot of pressure to press the Push button.

If the LED is not lit (dark, not RED or GREEN) when you press the Push button then it sounds like there may be a problem with the OWL pedal.

I would return the OWL Pedal to the shop where you bought it.

Martin.

Here’s the first draft of the ‘Patch Select’ explanatory YouTube video. Please let me know what you think…
